Recent wobbles in US and European banking markets have been triggered by idiosyncratic issues at some institutions and broader uncertainty about the impact of central banks’ monetary tightening. However, capital and liquidity levels of the banking industry in Europe continue to be very robust. In addition, asset quality and profitability are the strongest since the financial crisis 15 years ago. Nevertheless, the market tensions are likely to result in banks tightening lending conditions for the private sector further and they could fuel discussions about the effectiveness and potential adjustments of some regulations. Das BIP schrumpfte im vierten Quartal und könnte auch im ersten Quartal leicht rückläufig gewesen sein. Vorlaufindikatoren wie das ifo-Geschäftsklima oder der PMI für die Dienstleistungen deuten aber eine Erholung im zweiten Quartal an. Gemischte Signale kommen vom Industriesektor. Wir erwarten im Jahr 2023 eine Stagnation des BIP und eine jahresdurchschnittliche Gesamtinflationsrate von rund 6,1%. Die Preise für Wohnimmobilien fielen in Q4 2022 um 3,6% gegenüber Q4 2021. Die 5-10-jährigen Hypothekenzinsen kletterten von rund 1,2% im Dezember 2021 auf 3,6% im Februar 2023. Für das Jahresende 2023 erwarten wir ebenfalls 3,6%. Aufgrund des starken Zinsanstiegs normalisierte sich die Erschwinglichkeit von Wohneigentum in Deutschland seit Dezember 2021. [mehr]

In the first edition of our Energy Transition Monitor, we take stock of the current speed of renewables rollout, e-car uptake, heat-pump installations, and energy infrastructure build-up (e.g., regarding hydrogen) in Germany. We then analyse existing bottlenecks for reaching envisaged targets for 2030. Finally, we provide an update of current policy action aimed at mitigating those bottlenecks, both at the EU and national level, and potential implications of these policy measures on investment spending (private and public).
