The press statement of European Council President Michel after yesterday’s video conference of EU leaders remained vague on the EU’s joint fiscal response to the COVID-19 crisis. EU leaders endorsed their earlier agreement on the EUR 540 bn package of safety nets and also agreed “to work towards establishing a recovery fund”, asking the Commission to rapidly prepare a proposal of what this requires. Interlinking the EU's recovery plan with the budget might add another layer of complexity but could also serve as a spur for rapid agreements on both matters. [mehr]

Die Corona-Krise zieht auch den Immobilienmarkt in Mitleidenschaft. Da unter der Voraussetzung einer kräftigen Erholung in der zweiten Jahreshälfte alle fundamentalen Faktoren fortbestehen, beendet die Pandemie den Immobilienzyklus nicht, sondern lässt ihn lediglich pausieren. Wir konzentrieren uns in unserem Ausblick auf das Zusammenspiel von Auswirkungen der Corona-Krise und den fundamentalen Faktoren und analysieren die möglichen Folgen für den Wohnungsmarkt und Büroimmobilien. Mittelfristig könnte eine Flucht in Sicherheit und womöglich eine höhere Zuwanderung positive Impulse setzen. [mehr]

The economic slump is taking its toll on the banking industry. For the major US banks, profits in Q1 more than halved compared to the prior year, as loan loss reserves jumped. Revenues declined moderately with weakness in interest income and fees and commissions partly compensated for by a jump in trading income. Deposits, loans and other assets surged because clients hoarded liquidity. Banks’ capital ratios fell only somewhat and they remain well capitalised. Banks in Europe may have faced similar trends overall but will probably have benefited less from the supportive trading environment and suffered more from declining capital ratios. They are also handicapped by their much lower starting level in terms of profitability. [mehr]

Die Corona-Krise wirft die Frage auf, ob die verstärkte Verlagerung von Arbeitsplätzen ins Homeoffice letztlich die Nachfrage nach Büroraum reduziert. Je länger die Krise dauert, desto normaler und womöglich auch effizienter könnte sich die Zusammenarbeit innerhalb und zwischen Teams über die Distanz hinweg gestalten. Jedoch gibt es in der Corona-Krise sehr unterschiedliche Erfahrungen. Zudem dürfte es einen großen Unterschied machen, wie eingespielt ein Team vor der Corona-Krise war. [mehr]

The COVID-19 crisis raises the question of whether the increased shift towards working from home will ultimately reduce demand for office space. The longer the crisis continues, the more people will get used to long-distance co-operation – and the more efficient remote communication may become. However, employees and teams experience the corona crisis very differently. Much depends on how well a team worked together pre crisis. [mehr]

The German government has responded quickly and decisively to the economic fallout from the corona pandemic. Altogether, Germany’s anti-crisis measures – consisting of extra spending, guarantees and loan/participation programs – sum up to an astronomic value of around EUR 1.9 tr (well above 50% of GDP in 2019). This gives the government huge scope to fight the pandemic and economic crisis. In this note we try to quantify Germany’s fiscal costs from the corona crisis. [mehr]
